FACESKY - An Art Project by Carlos Estévez

Developed for Miami-Dade County Schools

Instructional kite making demo

In tandem with the video mapped projection piece, Estévez created an educational tool and interactive artwork. Through a demonstration video, Estévez inspires and guides students throughout the district to make kites that are based on identity, self-portraiture, and inclusivity which will culminate in a virtual exhibition and possible actual artworks throughout downtown Coral Gables.

“Every human being is potentially a creator. We can easily notice that in children’s drawings. It is during this period that they express themselves freely in a very genuine and authentic way. Children grow up, find their ways in life, but art remains. Art is always there to purify, to make us think, and to approach our spiritual universe. I used to make and fly kites in my childhood. Now, I realize from an artist’s perspective, the significance of that event. The kite depicts a connection between earth and sky, matter and the spirit. It is an attempt to see and to be seen.”
